Hadwin leads Valspar; Stenson lurks three back

Thanks to a second-round 64, Adam Hadwin leads Jim Herman by one stroke at the Valspar Championship. Here's how things stand through 36 holes at Innisbrook, where Henrik Stenson is in the hunt:Leaderboard: Hadwin (-10), Herman (-9), Tyrone Van Aswegen (-8), Dominic Bozzelli (-7), Russell Henley (-7), Henrik Stenson (-7)What it means: Hadwin remains in search of his first PGA Tour win after finishing runner-up earlier this year at the CareerBuilder Challenge, where he he made history with a third-round 59. This is his first 36-hole lead on the PGA Tour. Hadwin will play on Saturday with first-round leader Jim Herman, who followed up a first-round 62 with a score nine shots higher Friday, an even-par 71. But the man to watch this weekend is Stenson, the reigning champion golfer of the year who is making his first U.S. start of 2017 and is just three shots off the pace.Round of the day: As the golf world learned in January, Hadwin can make birdies in bunches. Although he went out in just 1 under, he made six back-nine birdies, including five in a row from Nos. 10-14, to come in with 29.Best of the rest: Van Aswegen started on the back nine and went through the Snake Pit unscathed. He made eight total birdies but dropped two shots on his final five holes to post 6-under 65. Biggest disappointment: Notable names to miss the even-par cut included Daniel Berger (+1), Ollie Schniederjans (+1), Russell Knox (+2), Steve Stricker (+2), Ernie Els (+2), Luke Donald (+2), Bubba Watson (+2), Justin Thomas (+3), Sam Saunders (+4), Smylie Kaufman (+4), Billy Horschel (+6), and Patrick Rodgers (+9).Quote of the day: Definitely messed up a couple of things. But Im 23. Im going to make mistakes, and everybody is going to view me as the villain. I wasnt trying to do anything to ruffle any feathers, but right now, Im learning what to say, how to say things, and getting better at doing it. - Bryson DeChambeau, tied for eighth at 5 under par

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Shinnecock Hills is no longer the only challenge at this U.S. Open. On a course that can cause problems in any weather, where triple bogeys or worse have been recorded on all but six holes, perhaps the most daunting prospect going into the weekend is Dustin Johnson with a four-shot lead.
